ABOUT US

LEARN ABOUT OUR THREE-PRONGED APPROACH

Breaking the Stigma. Healing Generations.
Leprosy is one of the world’s oldest known diseases—curable today, yet still surrounded by deep-rooted stigma and fear. In India, those affected are often cast out from society, forced to live in isolated colonies, and denied basic human rights such as education, employment, and healthcare. The stigma doesn’t stop with the disease—it affects entire families for generations, trapping them in cycles of poverty and hopelessness.
At Rising Star Outreach of India, we know that change is possible. Through a holistic approach grounded in medical care, quality education, and community development, we empower individuals and families affected by leprosy to reclaim their dignity, health, and future.
We have already impacted over 200 leprosy colonies across 9 states in India—but we’re just getting started. With your support, we can bring healing, opportunity, and lasting transformation to many more.
Join us in this vital mission. Together, we can erase the stigma and help end leprosy—for good.

“Leprosy work is not merely medical relief. It is transforming the frustration
in life into the joy of dedication, personal ambition into selfless service.

“If you can transform the life of a patient or change his values of life,
you can change the village and the country.”

- Mahatma Gandhi

MEDICAL CARE

Leprosy is completely curable—but fear, stigma, and lack of access to healthcare often keep people from seeking help in time. Many who contract leprosy are shunned by society, labelled as "untouchable," and struggle to find doctors willing to treat them.
At Rising Star Outreach, we bring healing directly to those in need through our mobile medical clinics, offering:
Leprosy screening and treatment
Vision care
Ongoing support for those with disabilities
Access to essential medicines and mobility aids
A simple multi-drug therapy can cure leprosy. With early detection, we can prevent disfigurement, disability, and the heartbreak that leprosy inflicts on families. For those already suffering the effects of advanced cases, we provide compassionate care, rehabilitation, and resources to help them regain dignity and independence.

COLONY DEVELOPMENT

We believe true healing goes beyond medicine—it’s about restoring dignity, purpose, and opportunity.
Our colony development programs are designed to foster self-reliance and promote long-term economic rehabilitation within leprosy-affected communities. By empowering colony leaders to oversee micro-grants and infrastructure projects, we help create sustainable growth from within.
Through these initiatives:
🔨 Infrastructure is improved – clean water, housing, and sanitation
💼 Micro-grants empower small businesses – with leadership and accountability kept local
👨‍👩‍👧 Families regain stability and dignity
🎓 Children can stay in school, free from the pressure of supporting the household
Rising Star Outreach helps turn marginalized colonies into thriving, self-sufficient communities where families are no longer defined by disease—but by hope, strength, and opportunity.

EDUCATION

Education is one of the most powerful tools in overcoming the fear and stigma associated with leprosy. At Rising Star Outreach, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed—regardless of their background or circumstances.
Our Peery Matriculation School serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade, offering a comprehensive, quality education. Nearly 20% of our student body comes from surrounding villages, fostering unity and breaking down the barriers of stigma as children from leprosy colonies learn alongside their peers from the broader community.
Through rigorous academics, including English, science, math, and computer technology, our students are equipped to pursue higher education and meaningful careers. Specialized tracks for 11th and 12th-grade students prepare them for junior college, university, and beyond.
We’re proud to share that 67 students are currently enrolled in college or are on track to attend this year after graduation—proving that education is the key to lifting families and communities out of poverty and isolation.

Understanding Leprosy

Get to know the causes, cure, and treatments of this ancient disease, as well as the myths and stigma that affect people who live with it

Leprosy is one of the world’s oldest diseases, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood. Despite being curable, its stigma and fear continue to affect those who are diagnosed, often leading to isolation, discrimination, and a lifetime of hardship.

What is Leprosy?
Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It primarily affects the skin, nerves, and mucous membranes, and if left untreated, it can lead to nerve damage, disfigurement, and disability.

Causes of Leprosy:
Leprosy is transmitted through droplets from the nose and mouth of an infected person. However, it is not highly contagious, and most people have a natural immunity to the disease. Early diagnosis and treatment prevent its progression.

The Cure:
Leprosy is curable with multi-drug therapy (MDT). With early detection, people can be fully treated, preventing long-term damage and disability. MDT is provided for free by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Myths and Stigma:
Despite being treatable, myths and misconceptions about leprosy continue to fuel fear and stigma. Many people with leprosy are still labelled as "untouchable" and rejected from society, leading to a lifetime of discrimination and hardship.

At Rising Star Outreach, we are working to change this narrative by educating communities, providing medical care, and promoting inclusion through education and community development.
